In recent years, the gaming industry has shown a growing willingness to provide its workforce with vital mental health resources and support mechanisms. Game development studios have increasingly sought expert guidance to ensure the well-being of their employees.

One pivotal organization leading the charge in combating mental health stigma and advancing support within the gaming sphere is “Take This.” GamesIndustry.biz recently engaged in a conversation with the organization’s Executive Director, Eve Crevoshay, and Clinical Program Manager, Cassie Walker, to discuss their efforts in fostering a more mentally health-conscious industry.

Operating since 2012, Take This has been a cornerstone in raising awareness and advocating for mental health in the gaming sector. Eve Crevoshay, who has been with the organization for the past five years, reflects on the challenges of advocacy work in this field.

“The cultural conversation surrounding mental health has undergone a significant transformation within the game industry,” explains the director. She notes that the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst, significantly impacting game studios’ perspectives on their cultures and the well-being of their employees.

“Certainly, the pandemic brought about a heightened awareness of well-being. However, some of this momentum has waned as the pandemic ‘ended.’ Nonetheless, there is a growing recognition of the importance of proper representation in games,” Crevoshay continues.

Cassie Walker echoes this sentiment, acknowledging the industry’s progress in enhancing mental health awareness while also emphasizing that there remain further opportunities and challenges to be addressed.

The strides made in the games industry towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive mental health environment are undeniable. However, Take This and other advocates in the field continue to underscore the importance of sustained efforts to prioritize the mental well-being of all those involved in game development. As the industry evolves, so too must its commitment to promoting mental health, reducing stigma, and ensuring a healthier, more supportive work environment for its talented professionals.
