Richarlison’s Mental Health Message Beyond Football

09/20/2023
in News

Tottenham striker Richarlison’s decision to openly discuss his mental health challenges transcends the world of football and serves as a powerful message for millions of young men that seeking help is not only acceptable but essential.

Richarlison’s revelation that he would be seeking assistance for his mental health came this month, and he went on to deliver a standout performance, scoring the equalizer and assisting in the late match-winner in Tottenham’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

The past 12 months have been difficult for Richarlison, both at club and international levels, following his £60 million ($115 million AUD) transfer to Spurs in 2022. Last season, he struggled to find the net, scoring just once in the Premier League. He referred to his debut campaign as “s***” and admitted to needing psychological help earlier this month.

Tottenham’s head coach, Ange Postecoglou, publicly expressed the club’s commitment to providing Richarlison with any necessary assistance.

Darren Lewis, a journalist for the Daily Mirror, commended Richarlison for openly addressing his mental health and praised the club for its response. He emphasized the significance of the striker’s vulnerability for millions of fans who heard his message.

According to the UK Government, 75% of suicides in 2021 were among males, a trend that has persisted since the mid-1990s. Statistics also reveal that men in the UK are less likely than women to seek help, accounting for only 36% of referrals to therapists within the National Health Service.

Ian Wright, an Arsenal legend, acknowledged the unique pressures that professional male footballers face due to their high-profile careers but stressed that they also grapple with the same human challenges as everyone else. He noted that the pressures of performing in a public arena can be particularly demanding.

Mario Melchiot, a former Chelsea defender, echoed Wright’s sentiments, emphasizing that despite their salaries, footballers remain human and experience the same emotions and challenges. He commended Tottenham captain Son Heung-min for recognizing the human side of the game and supporting Richarlison after his performance.

The conversation underscores the importance of recognizing the mental health challenges faced by professional athletes and the need for open dialogue and support within the sports industry. Richarlison’s willingness to speak out sends a powerful message that resonates beyond football, encouraging others to seek help when needed and prioritize their mental well-being.
