Copper Country Mental Health Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Open Houses

Copper Country Mental Health (CCMH) marked its upcoming 60th anniversary with a series of open houses on a Wednesday evening. The agency opened the doors to each of its four facilities, situated in Ontonagon, L’Anse, Calumet, and Houghton, to celebrate a significant milestone in its journey. While the agency was initially established in December 1963, the decision to celebrate early was guided by a desire to avoid potential weather-related challenges.

Leslie Griffith, Associate Director of CCMH, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the celebration. “We’re holding this now before the snow flies,” noted Griffith. The agency’s commitment to fostering community engagement was clear as they organized this event to include the community in the celebration.

During the open houses, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., attendees had the chance to enjoy cookies, coffee, and participate in a free raffle for various prizes, including a 20oz coffee mug. It was also an opportunity for individuals to meet the staff and inquire about the diverse range of services provided by the agency.

Griffith outlined CCMH’s services, emphasizing their mission to support individuals dealing with serious mental illness or developmental disabilities. The agency offers services that encompass a broad spectrum, from crisis services and psychiatry to therapy and assistance for individuals striving to live independently within the community. This includes activities such as grocery shopping, budgeting, and social outings.

The agency’s engagement with the community and collaboration with partners play a significant role in fulfilling various community needs. Griffith expressed, “We are happy to work with our community partners.” The open house was a platform to communicate their vital role within the community and their commitment to providing assistance and support to those in need.
