Innovative Virtual Platform, Innerworld, Aims to Bridge Mental Health Gaps for Veterans

03/13/2024
in News

Noah Robinson, co-founder of Innerworld, understands the isolating experience of grappling with mental health challenges without an outlet for expression. His personal journey, marked by struggles with depression and thoughts of suicide, found solace in an unexpected place – an online game called RuneScape. Here, Robinson, operating under the guise of a human avatar in a virtual world, discovered a community that embraced and accepted him, providing a vital lifeline during his darkest moments.

Now 32, Robinson has translated his experiences into the creation of Innerworld, a groundbreaking virtual mental health platform developed in collaboration with Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and mental health advocate Jewel. Launched on March 11, Innerworld has been introduced across six Veterans Administrations medical centers and Veterans Care Health Systems, offering veterans 24/7 free access to mental health tools and resources.

Drawing on Robinson’s expertise in cognitive behavioral immersion (CBI), a psychological intervention he developed, Innerworld facilitates anonymous peer-to-peer support through self-created avatars. CBI has demonstrated effectiveness in addressing various mental health issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse.

Available through phone, computer, or Meta VR headsets, Innerworld has received a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to further research tools aimed at reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Robinson shared his vision, stating, “This collaboration comes at a pivotal time, as we face high rates of veteran suicide. Our platform provides a virtual sanctuary where all veterans can connect, share experiences and receive the support and tools they need and deserve, regardless of time or location.”

In addition to on-demand access, Innerworld organizes panels featuring mental health experts to engage with veterans. During these sessions, avatars provide a unique sense of presence, fostering camaraderie and connection, echoing the ambiance of sharing stories around a campfire.

Cogit8, a 13-year combat veteran utilizing the platform under this avatar, expressed appreciation, stating, “Having some struggles of my own, the VA struggles to maintain a mental health platform that can help everyone in its system. When I came here to Innerworld, everyone here was really non-judgmental. Nobody really knows who I am.” Innerworld’s approach has resonated positively with veterans seeking effective avenues to address their mental health concerns.
