Tamworth is set to welcome the Psychs on Bikes, a dedicated group of volunteer mental health practitioners and nurses on Monday, April 8, as they embark on a mission to raise awareness about mental health issues and offer complimentary health assessments to the local community.
A spokesperson representing the group disclosed that a team consisting of approximately eight to ten psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health nurses will journey from Goulburn to Grafton from April 6 to 13, making a stop in Tamworth along the route.
The Tamworth leg of their journey will be centered at the Tamworth Jockey Club, where volunteers will conduct screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and mental health concerns including suicide awareness. Additionally, they will engage in conversations with residents about the interconnectedness of mental and physical health.
The presence of the group often garners interest from passers-by, drawn by the sight of motorbikes, rendering the team highly approachable for discussions.
As part of their visit, the Psychs on Bikes will coincide with the racing event at the Tamworth Jockey Club on Monday, April 8, with gates opening at 12pm and offering free entry. The health assessments will be available in the betting ring from 1pm onwards.
Following their Tamworth engagement, the team will proceed to Armidale on April 10 to extend their outreach efforts by conducting free health checks at the Armidale Visitor Information Centre from 2:30pm to 5pm.
