Since its inception, a drop-in service catering to young individuals grappling with mental health challenges has witnessed a remarkable surge in attendance, doubling its numbers monthly.

Operated by Mind BLMK, the Young Person’s Sanctuary in Milton Keynes commenced operations in January, extending support to individuals aged between 14 and 18 confronting crises or distress. Situated at CAMHS Eaglestone Health Centre, the sanctuary operates daily from 16:00 to 22:00, ensuring accessibility for young people after school hours.

Lucy Foley, the center’s delivery manager, emphasized its role as a safe space for young individuals to articulate their emotions and confront their struggles. “They can talk about anything, how they are feeling and the struggles they have,” Foley stated, acknowledging the pervasive challenges faced by young people in schools and communities.

“The service is already making a difference,” Foley noted, citing a significant uptick in attendance figures. From seven attendees in February, the numbers surged to 14 in March and escalated further to 20 in April. The sanctuary provides guidance and support, assisting youth in navigating issues such as self-harm, interpersonal conflicts, and emotional distress.

Testimonials from young beneficiaries underscore the sanctuary’s impact, with individuals expressing gratitude for the newfound solace and coping mechanisms acquired during sessions. “I came in feeling really low and now I feel better after our session,” one young person shared, highlighting the transformative nature of the support offered.

In addition to its drop-in services, the sanctuary extends its reach through engagement initiatives encompassing schools, community centers, and wellbeing fairs. Spearheading these endeavors is Michael Green, a dedicated youth mental health outreach worker, who underscores the importance of fostering dialogue and support networks within the community.

Acknowledging the apprehension some may feel about seeking help, Green encourages individuals to confide in trusted figures. “If you can’t talk to us, talk with a friend, a trusted adult, a parent, anyone, but reach out and share with someone,” Green urged, emphasizing the significance of seeking assistance proactively.

Every aspect of the sanctuary’s support process is meticulously explained, ensuring individuals receive tailored assistance aligned with their needs. As demand continues to surge, the Young Person’s Sanctuary remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a nurturing environment where young individuals can find solace and support on their journey towards mental well-being.
