THUNDER BAY – The Ontario government is accelerating access to mental health and substance use services for young people by establishing a new Youth Wellness Hub in Thunder Bay. This initiative is part of the province’s expansion, adding 10 new hubs to the existing 22, bringing the total to 32 hubs since 2020.
“Under Premier Ford’s leadership, our government is committed to enhancing mental health and addictions services across Ontario,” stated Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “By expanding Youth Wellness Hubs, young people in Thunder Bay will have convenient, local access to essential mental health and addictions care.”
Starting in 2025, the new hub will serve youth aged 12 to 25 and their families in Thunder Bay and nearby areas. It will provide free, comprehensive services, including mental health support, substance use treatment, primary care, and Indigenous healing in a safe, youth-friendly environment.
Children’s Centre Thunder Bay is leading the hub’s development, collaborating with local youth, community partners, and Indigenous service providers. This collaborative effort ensures that diverse youth voices and the unique needs of Indigenous youth are central to the hub’s design and planning. The hub will offer a culturally appropriate space with traditional teachings and support for Indigenous youth and their families.
“With the expansion of our Youth Wellness Hubs network, we are ensuring that youth across the province have timely access to top-tier mental health and addiction services,” said Michael Tibollo, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “Thunder Bay’s new hub will be a safe and supportive space, helping young people connect with their community and providing them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges.”
The initiative is part of the government’s plan, “Your Health: A Plan for Connected and Convenient Care,” which aims to streamline access to mental health and substance use support, primary care, and social services for Ontario’s youth.
