SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – Coping with the loss of a loved one to suicide is profoundly challenging. Following the tragic loss of her daughter, a mother took action on Saturday to help prevent future tragedies by advocating for stronger gun legislation.
Hailey Barrick took her own life in February after being diagnosed with a mental illness. Her mother, Larissa, organized a March for Mental Health on Saturday afternoon, aiming to make it more difficult for individuals with mental health issues to obtain firearms.
“With Hailey’s Legacy Rally for Suicide Awareness, we want to bring attention to this bill and let people know about Hailey’s legacy,” Larissa said. “We also aim to honor those who have passed by suicide and promote change, healing, and support for all affected.”
Keynote speakers at the event included Sioux Falls Police Chief Jon Thum, Rep. Kadyn Wittman, and representatives from Moms Demand Action. The rally served as both a memorial and a call to action, emphasizing the need for legislative change to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
