In the past five years, Malaysia reported 4,440 suicides, with the highest number occurring in 2021. The Chinese community has consistently had the highest rates, while men represent over 3,600 of the cases. Mental health issues, economic challenges, and societal expectations are significant factors contributing to these rates, according to experts.
Dr. Siti Aisyah Panatik from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia highlighted that economic instability and cultural stigma exacerbate mental health struggles. Academic pressures and substance abuse also affect youth suicides. To address the crisis, she advocates for improved mental health education, support systems, and peer-based programs. The mental health crisis helpline, Heal Line 15555, has been active in providing support and interventions since 2022.
