KOCHI — A new helpline dedicated to mental health support is set to launch in Kochi, expanding the city’s ‘Happiness Kochi’ initiative to provide accessible mental healthcare services. This extension follows a successful pilot program in two wards and will be supported by the District Mental Health Programme, which is part of the broader National Mental Health Programme aimed at decentralizing mental health services.
The helpline is designed to offer confidential support and guidance to individuals facing mental health challenges or seeking assistance for loved ones. “Many individuals hesitate to seek mental health help due to societal stigma. This tele-based helpline will provide essential information and guidance on accessing mental health services, ensuring a broader reach across the city based on initial feedback,” said Mayor M. Anilkumar.
In addition to the new helpline, existing services such as Tele-MANAS, which offers round-the-clock free mental healthcare, will be integrated into the city’s mental health framework. The Kochi corporation will serve as a central coordinator, connecting residents with appropriate services based on their needs.
The ‘Happiness Kochi Mental Health Programme’ is a comprehensive intervention led by a steering committee under the mayor’s guidance, involving mental health professionals. The program features two main components: community and school-based mental health services. These components aim to promote positive mental health through activities like yoga, music therapy, and the treatment of mental illnesses.
Community-based efforts include the establishment of ‘Happiness Centres’ in various wards. Currently, centres are operational in Kadebhagam (ward 13) and Chakkaraparambu (ward 46), with plans to expand to Karuvelippady and Amaravathy. A new initiative will also focus on providing mental health support to residents living alone in flats, with a pilot program set for these four wards.
In the educational sector, the ‘Happiness Kochi Project’ has introduced mental health services in two schools: Government HSS, Edappally, and Government HSS, Vennala. The program has established ‘Happiness Clubs’ in these schools, with student ‘Happiness Ambassadors’ leading activities that include sensitization programs for students, teachers, and parents. Specialized care will be provided as needed, with referral protocols being developed to ensure seamless access to professional services.
Mayor Anilkumar emphasized the importance of these initiatives: “The expansion of the ‘Happiness Kochi’ program reflects our commitment to improving mental health support across the city. By integrating these services and reaching out to various community segments, we aim to foster a supportive environment for mental well-being.”
