London — The Anna Freud Centre has announced the appointment of Professor Eamon McCory as its new Chief Executive Officer. McCory, who has served as the charity’s Director of Postgraduate Studies, takes over from Professor Peter Fonagy, who has led the organization for the past 21 years.

McCory, a well-respected figure in the field of developmental neuroscience and psychopathology, joined the Anna Freud Centre 18 years ago to develop its postgraduate programs in child mental health. This new role marks his first position as a CEO in the charity sector.

In addition to his new role at Anna Freud, McCory is a Professor at University College London (UCL), where he specializes in trauma support. He also co-founded and has served as co-director of the UK Trauma Council, an initiative associated with the Anna Freud Centre.

“My research has focused on understanding how trauma and adversity affect mental health, particularly through the lens of the child’s social environment,” McCory said. He also drew from his personal experiences growing up in West Belfast during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. “Experiencing violence and instability firsthand has given me a profound personal insight into trauma, which I have sought to enhance through my professional work.”

McCory expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating, “I am excited to build on the strong foundations laid by Professor Fonagy and to work with an exceptional team committed to addressing complex challenges with care and innovation. I look forward to driving forward our mission to support young people and tackle the issues they face today.”

The Anna Freud Centre’s board and staff look forward to McCory’s leadership and the continued advancement of its mission under his guidance.
