NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) — Mental health and suicide prevention organizations convened in North Platte on Saturday for the annual Stop the Stigma event, coinciding with National Suicide Prevention Month in September.
The Surviving Suicide Foundation, along with Stop the Stigma and Families First, collaborated to emphasize the importance of seeking help for mental health issues. The event aimed to raise awareness about available resources within the North Platte community.
Miai Lewis, director of the Surviving Suicide Foundation, highlighted the mission of the organizations involved. “We are working to eliminate the stigma that prevents people from seeking mental health support. Many view mental health as a weakness, but we want to foster a community where individuals feel empowered to ask for help,” Lewis stated. “If someone needs assistance, we are here to guide them to the right resources.”
The event featured an awareness wall and various outreach programs at the Connection Shelter, focusing on community recovery efforts. Lewis emphasized the collective goal of supporting the community and enhancing mental health resources for all residents.
