Amy Helm, the Local Recovery Coordinator for the VA Medical Center, emphasizes the importance of this summit, stating, “It’s a nationwide initiative at all the VAs, providing an excellent opportunity to partner with community members and exchange valuable resources.”

The summit will feature several speakers and resources aimed at educating attendees of all ages about mental health and suicide prevention. Helm, who has dedicated years to helping individuals navigate mental health challenges, expresses her passion for supporting those who feel isolated or alone.

Heather Williams and Rick Strait, both from the Community Counseling Center in Cape Girardeau, also encourage community outreach and support for individuals struggling with mental health issues. “Suicide is one of those things that does not discriminate. It touches all ages and impacts everyone,” Strait notes.

The Mental Health Summit aims to normalize discussions around sensitive topics such as suicide and depression, making it easier for individuals to seek help and support. “When we get to talking about suicide as commonly as passing the ketchup or salt, we’ll really make a difference,” Strait adds.

This summit is an inclusive event welcoming teens, students, veterans, elders, and anyone affected by trauma or mental health struggles. It promises to be an informative and supportive gathering for the Poplar Bluff community.
