A Philadelphia teenager is transforming his personal journey with mental health into a beacon of hope for others through his clothing brand, Project Spread Smiles. At just 18 years old, Sammy Grossman has turned his struggles with depression and anxiety into a powerful message promoting emotional wellness.

A Symbol of Hope

For Grossman, smiley faces have become a significant symbol of resilience. He describes them as “the number one way to speak without speaking.” For years, however, his own smile was overshadowed by the weight of his mental health challenges. “School was definitely difficult,” he reflects. “It was hard for me to connect with my peers and get through the day.”

While therapy provided some relief, the true turning point in his journey came with the establishment of his brand, which features a unique smiley face logo. This logo includes a semicolon for one of the eyes, symbolizing continuation and perseverance.

The Meaning Behind the Semicolon

“The meaning behind the semicolon is that you could have given up, but you kept on going,” Grossman explains. “You didn’t end up with a period but a comma to keep on going in life.” This message resonates deeply with those who have faced similar struggles, offering a sense of solidarity and encouragement.

Support from Family

Sammy’s parents, Alison and Craig Grossman, have been pillars of support throughout his journey. They express their relief and pride in seeing their son turn his past darkness into a positive force. “He’s not embarrassed to say that he had struggles, and he wants to use that in a positive way,” says Alison Grossman. Craig adds, “It’s been a great process, and watching him during that journey has been extremely rewarding.”

A Bright Green Message

In line with mental health awareness, Sammy’s smiley face logo is bright green, symbolizing hope and renewal. On the back of his hoodies, he includes an uplifting message: “Hey, to the person behind me… you look great today! Keep smiling.” This encouraging note serves to spread positivity and remind others that they are not alone.

Looking Ahead

As a high school senior currently navigating college decisions, Sammy Grossman is not just focused on his education but also on the future of Project Spread Smiles. He hopes to expand his brand to include a wider range of products, continuing to spread his uplifting message far and wide.

Through his creativity and resilience, Sammy Grossman is proving that even in the face of adversity, it’s possible to rise up and inspire others. His clothing brand stands as a testament to the power of a smile and the importance of mental health awareness.
