DaBaby Hosts First-Ever Youth Town Hall for Mental Health Awareness at West Charlotte High School

West Charlotte, NC – On October 10, in honor of World Mental Health Day, rapper DaBaby launched his mental health initiative, DaBaby Cares, in collaboration with Mental Health America of Central Carolinas (MHACC) to host the first-ever youth town hall at West Charlotte High School. This event marks a significant step towards raising awareness about mental health issues among young people and creating a supportive community for those in need.

The year-long partnership aims to establish a “safe space” for youth worldwide, uniting mental health leaders, young individuals, and their families to offer real-time support for overcoming mental health challenges. This initiative is particularly close to DaBaby’s heart, as it stems from personal tragedy; in 2020, he lost his brother, Glenn Johnson, to suicide, leaving behind three daughters. This loss has fueled DaBaby’s commitment to advocating for mental health awareness and providing resources to help others navigate similar struggles.

In his mission statement, DaBaby emphasized the importance of accessible resources and the need to address mental health openly: “I believe that if more of the correct resources were in place to support mental health awareness and self-love, the world would see far less of these tragedies. In honor of my brother’s untimely passing, I have become devoted to utilizing my platform and resources to provide the tools needed to combat mental health issues. Breaking the long ongoing cycle of mental illness in minority communities and normalizing the conversation around mental health is crucial. Join me in my journey to save lives one step at a time while preventing families around the world from enduring the tragic pain of losing a loved one.”

During the town hall, DaBaby and representatives from MHACC engaged with students to raise awareness about mental health issues affecting their generation. Each student received a Youth Mental Health 101 Resource Guide, co-authored by DaBaby, designed to help them cope with mental health challenges and develop self-care strategies. The guide serves as a practical tool for young people to understand and address their mental health needs.

The event included a fireside chat where DaBaby opened up about his personal experiences with trauma and his journey toward rehabilitation. His candid discussion highlighted the importance of sharing one’s story and seeking help, fostering a sense of community among the attendees.

The youth town hall not only serves as a platform for dialogue but also aims to empower students to take charge of their mental health. By breaking down stigmas and encouraging open conversations, DaBaby’s initiative hopes to create lasting change within communities, particularly in minority groups that often face barriers in accessing mental health resources.

As the town hall concluded, the positive feedback from students and community members reflected a collective hope for greater awareness and understanding of mental health issues. DaBaby’s initiative underscores the significance of mental health advocacy and the impact that public figures can have in bringing attention to critical social issues.
