NHS Announces Fly-Fishing as a Top Sport for Mental Health and Wellbeing

10/14/2024
in News

On this World Mental Health Day, the NHS has highlighted fly-fishing as one of the best under-recognized sports for combating anxiety and depression. Celebrated for its tranquil and immersive nature, fly-fishing provides individuals with an opportunity to engage in the great outdoors, which can significantly enhance mental health and wellbeing alongside activities such as dancing and gardening.

In the UK, mental health issues account for the largest cause of disability, affecting one in four adults each year. Alarmingly, over 2 million people are currently waiting for NHS mental health services, and since 2017, the number of young people struggling with mental health has nearly doubled. In light of this growing concern, initiatives that promote mental wellbeing through accessible activities like fly-fishing are more important than ever.

Sportfish, the operator of the Sportfish Game Fishing Centre nestled in the Berkshire countryside, has become a supporter and provider of the Get Fishing for Wellbeing program. This mental health initiative, launched by the Angling Trust, aims to utilize the benefits of fishing to improve mental health.

The advantages of fly-fishing extend beyond simply being an enjoyable pastime. Participants experience numerous mental health benefits, including:

Exercise: The physical activity involved in fly-fishing promotes overall fitness, contributing to improved mood and reduced anxiety levels.

Mindfulness: Engaging in fly-fishing requires focus and concentration, allowing individuals to be present in the moment, which can lead to reduced stress and anxiety.

Connection: The sport encourages social interactions, providing opportunities to connect with others and build a supportive community.

Vitality: Immersing oneself in nature can invigorate the spirit, enhancing feelings of vitality and happiness.

Simon Tilbury, Group Head of Marketing at Sportfish and Farlows, emphasized the significant positive impacts of fly-fishing on mental health. He stated, “Fly fishing is incredibly beneficial at making significant positive impacts on mental health and wellbeing. The simple act of concentration while being immersed in the beauty of the natural world makes such a world of change. Not only are you being present and enjoying the outdoors, but you have the opportunity to connect with new people, learn new skills, and truly take on the sport as a meditative practice. Everyone should give it a go just once to see for themselves.”

As awareness of mental health continues to grow, activities like fly-fishing offer a valuable avenue for individuals seeking natural and therapeutic methods to improve their mental health. Embracing such sports can lead to a healthier lifestyle while fostering a deeper connection with nature and community.
