The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is urging individuals in Gwent to be aware of the urgent mental health support services available during the festive season.

While Christmas is often associated with joy and celebration, for some, it can be a difficult time of year. The health board is reminding the public that mental health support is accessible 24/7, especially for those who may need assistance during this challenging period.

For anyone requiring urgent mental health support—whether it’s day or night—the 111 service, accessible by pressing option two, is available. This service connects individuals to specially trained local mental well-being practitioners who can provide immediate, non-life-threatening help.

The 111 (Option 2) service offers personalized one-on-one care, ensuring that each individual’s unique needs are met. A Wellbeing Practitioner from the service explained, “When you call 111 (Press Option 2), you’re reaching out to someone who is there just for you. It’s not scripted, but real people offering genuine advice. We are the friendly face you can’t see, delivering person-centered care to put you first. We work with individuals to create a plan that ensures they have a say in their care.”

The service provides crucial support for individuals with a variety of mental health challenges, including those dealing with existing mental health conditions, individuals experiencing a mental health crisis for the first time, and those whose symptoms have worsened.

Additionally, the service offers support for people who have self-harmed, as long as it’s not life-threatening, as well as for individuals showing signs of dementia or those facing domestic violence or abuse—whether physical, sexual, or emotional.

For those already under the care of a mental health team, the health board recommends following any crisis plan provided, including using a specific crisis line number given by a healthcare professional.

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board emphasizes that mental health support is available for anyone in need this Christmas, ensuring that help is just a phone call away.
