McLean County Students Training to Become ‘Teen Mental Health First Aiders’

02/05/2025
in News

A groundbreaking initiative is underway at McLean County High School, as it partners with RiverValley Behavioral Health to become the first school in Kentucky to train its entire student body to be “Teen Mental Health First Aiders.” This innovative program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to identify signs of mental health crises among their peers and connect them with appropriate support services.

Purpose of the Program

The Teen Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program is modeled after traditional first aid training but focuses on mental health, helping young people recognize symptoms of mental distress or mental health crises. Students will learn how to respond effectively to various mental health situations, providing initial support until professional help can be accessed.

The primary goal is to empower students to become a supportive resource for their peers, helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and promoting a culture of understanding and assistance within the school community.

Training Details

The student training will take place throughout January and February, with the curriculum aimed at fostering a deep understanding of mental health challenges and effective ways to assist peers in crisis. The training sessions will cover a range of topics, including recognizing signs of depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health struggles that may affect teenagers.

By teaching teens how to provide this type of support, the program helps normalize mental health conversations and creates an environment where students feel more comfortable reaching out for help when needed.

Graduation and Family Involvement

Upon completing the training, students will participate in a graduation celebration in recognition of their efforts. The event will not only honor the students’ hard work but also engage families in the process, fostering a broader understanding of mental health and its importance in the community.

Long-Term Impact

This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the McLean County High School community, encouraging a more proactive and supportive approach to mental health among young people. By training students to be Mental Health First Aiders, the school is taking a crucial step in addressing adolescent mental health concerns and ensuring that students have the resources and support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

This program also sets an example for other schools in the state and beyond, showing how educational institutions can play a vital role in promoting mental well-being and providing students with the tools to help themselves and others.
