Duler Parish Holds Awareness Programme on Mental Health

in News

In a significant effort to raise awareness about mental health, the Parish of St Francis Xavier in Duler hosted a comprehensive awareness programme on Diocesan Health Apostolate Sunday. The event, organized by the Family Apostolate Cell and the Social Apostolate Cell, focused on fostering open conversations about mental well-being and providing valuable resources to attendees.

Raising Awareness in the Community

The three-hour session, led by psychologist and counsellor Ketaki Parob Gadekar, was a remarkable step in addressing the often-stigmatized topic of mental health. The programme attracted nearly 200 participants from various age groups, making it a well-received and impactful initiative within the community. Gadekar, along with her team of students-in-training, offered insightful discussions, relatable anecdotes, and interactive exercises designed to engage the audience and create a more inclusive, supportive environment.

One of the most touching moments came when Gadekar’s students shared their personal experiences with mental health challenges. These stories not only made the session more relatable but also helped to break down barriers, showing participants that they were not alone in their struggles.

Confidential Q&A and Busting Myths

A unique feature of the programme was the confidential question-and-answer session, where attendees could submit their queries and concerns anonymously by scanning a QR code. This approach ensured that participants felt comfortable asking sensitive questions about mental health without fear of judgment. Over 40 questions were read aloud and addressed by Gadekar and her team, allowing them to tackle common misconceptions, provide clarity, and offer guidance on how to handle everyday mental health challenges.

One of the key points discussed was the distinction between counsellors and psychiatrists. Gadekar explained that while both play crucial roles in mental health care, their functions differ significantly. Counsellors focus on providing emotional support, guidance, and coping strategies, while psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions, often with medication.

Additionally, Gadekar outlined important “red flags” that signal when professional intervention is needed. This was vital information for the attendees, as it helped them understand when to seek help for themselves or loved ones, especially in times of distress.

A Call for More Mental Health Sessions

The success of the programme has sparked a demand for more specialized mental health sessions, particularly those tailored to specific age groups. Many participants expressed interest in further discussions that could address issues like anxiety, depression, and stress, especially among students, young adults, and older individuals.

In response to this feedback, the Parish of St Francis Xavier at Duler has pledged to continue its commitment to mental health awareness. The organisers plan to hold more sessions to ensure that the conversation about mental health remains open and ongoing. The Parish sees this initiative as part of a larger vision to build a community grounded in faith, hope, and love, where individuals can find support and strength in times of need.

Looking Ahead: A Vision for Support and Care

The Parish’s efforts to address mental health come at a time when such conversations are becoming more urgent. By focusing on education and awareness, they are helping to reduce the stigma around mental health challenges and encouraging individuals to seek help when necessary. The success of this event demonstrates the power of community-based initiatives in fostering understanding and providing the support that individuals need.

With the positive feedback received, the Parish is eager to extend its efforts further, ensuring that mental health remains a top priority. The awareness programme at Duler has not only started a much-needed conversation but has also set the stage for more initiatives that offer both emotional and practical support to individuals navigating mental health struggles.
