TAMPA, Fla. — A new behavioral health center, the first of its kind in Florida, has opened in the Tampa Medical & Research District. Tampa General Hospital, Lifepoint Health, and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine have teamed up to launch the state’s inaugural academic medical center-affiliated behavioral health teaching hospital.

Located at 1303 West Kennedy Boulevard, the facility spans 83,000 square feet and features 96 inpatient beds. Set to officially open in March, the hospital will provide round-the-clock inpatient care for individuals in mental health crises, offering services such as medication management, safety planning, and both individual and group therapy. Future plans include the introduction of partial hospitalization and outpatient treatment programs.

John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, emphasized that the new center addresses the growing demand for mental health services in the community. Lifepoint Health Chairman and CEO David Dill highlighted that the project builds upon the organizations’ successful partnership, including the TGH Rehabilitation Hospital, which opened in 2020.

The facility will also serve as a training center for medical students and residents from USF Health’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at the Morsani College of Medicine. USF Health President Rhea Law expressed gratitude to state leaders for their support through Senate Bill 330, which established the behavioral health teaching hospital designation in Florida.

Doug Leonardo, who brings over 25 years of experience in behavioral health, has been appointed as the president and CEO of the new hospital.
