Capricorn Coast, QLD — In a powerful testament to community spirit and mental health advocacy, two family-run businesses from Yeppoon and Rockhampton—Baked on 44 and Esdale Sinclair and Associates—have helped raise more than $83,000 for the Black Dog Institute, placing the Capricornia region in the national spotlight for its generosity and initiative.
The impressive sum was collected through the Black Dog Fundraiser Capricornia, a charity golf day held in 2024, led by Kristan Casuscelli, owner of Baked on 44, and his long-time friend and co-organiser, Errol Bambrick. Their collaboration, supported by a network of local sponsors and enthusiastic participants, turned a regional event into a force for national impact.
“Supporting mental health is something incredibly close to my heart,” Kristan shared.
“Through this fundraiser, we’ve shown what small businesses and a committed community can achieve when united by a shared purpose.”
A Community-Led Movement
From local business sponsorships to residents volunteering and attending, the golf day became more than just a fundraiser—it was a beacon of unity and purpose. Kristan and Errol’s efforts drew widespread praise, with Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll lauding the duo as role models for grassroots community action.
“Kristan and Errol have truly set an inspiring example of what community spirit can achieve,” Carroll said.
“This extraordinary effort not only raises awareness for mental health but also showcases the heart and determination that define our Capricorn Coast.”
National Recognition
The Black Dog Institute has acknowledged the Capricornia initiative as one of the top-tier donations nationally. A representative from the Institute will travel to Yeppoon in May for a special presentation, marking the occasion with a formal acceptance of the donation and offering their gratitude to the region’s supporters.
Looking Ahead: The Black Hat Initiative
Building on this momentum, Kristan is preparing to launch a bold new campaign at the 2025 event: The Black Hat Initiative. This project will feature the design and sale of custom black hats, with proceeds going toward men’s mental health awareness and the establishment of vital support networks across Central Queensland.
The initiative aims to spark conversations, break down stigma, and provide practical assistance where it’s most needed. Proceeds will support the expansion of mental health services, including outreach programs and community-based care initiatives.
Mark Your Calendar
The next Black Dog Fundraiser Capricornia charity golf day is scheduled for Friday, 12 September 2025. All proceeds will once again go toward the Black Dog Institute and its mission to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions in Australia.
Addressing a National Need
With 1 in 5 Australians experiencing a mental health condition each year, the urgency for awareness, support, and open dialogue has never been greater. Initiatives like those in the Capricorn Coast not only raise vital funds but also help normalize conversations around mental health, particularly for men—who continue to suffer in silence due to stigma and outdated social norms.
Through the leadership of people like Kristan and Errol, and the dedication of regional communities like Yeppoon and Rockhampton, Australia is inching closer to a future where no one has to face mental illness alone.
