Boosting Mental Health through Martial Arts: One Soldier’s Journey

09/19/2023
in News

Maintaining mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and for U.S. Army 1LT Morisa McAulay of the 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, practicing martial arts, specifically jiu-jitsu, has become an integral part of her mental health regimen.

McAulay’s journey into martial arts began during her high school years, as she sought ways to express her emotions and challenge her introverted nature. She joined the wrestling team, marking the start of her martial arts journey.

Upon entering the military and relocating to Fort Stewart, McAulay fulfilled her long-standing goal of learning jiu-jitsu by finding a gym nearby. This achievement held significant importance for her, as martial arts served as a means to enhance her mental well-being.

McAulay strongly believes in the benefits of martial arts for individuals grappling with mental health challenges. She explains that martial arts, particularly jiu-jitsu, teaches individuals to slow down their thought processes as each move sets up another move. This mental discipline and strategic thinking can be immensely helpful for those dealing with mental health issues.

Learning jiu-jitsu was initially challenging for McAulay, as it differed from her previous experience in wrestling. However, with consistent training, she gradually became more comfortable with the martial art. Her dedication paid off when she had the opportunity to participate in a combatives event during Marne Week at Fort Stewart.

Despite her limited knowledge of combatives, McAulay chose to take part in the event to continue exposing herself to new experiences. She particularly remembers being introduced to striking techniques, an aspect she had not encountered before. Learning how to take punches and adapting to this new form of combat marked a significant shift in her martial arts journey.

McAulay’s dedication and growth led her to compete in the Newbreed World Championship tournament in Florida, where she exceeded her own expectations and won several medals.

Now, while deployed to Poland, McAulay is focused on improving not only herself but also her unit by organizing opportunities for them to learn jiu-jitsu. She encourages others, especially those struggling with mental health, to explore physical sports like martial arts.

According to McAulay, engaging in martial arts can instill mental and physical toughness, enable individuals to step out of their comfort zones, connect with new people, and foster a healthier mental health environment.

In summary, 1LT Morisa McAulay’s journey in martial arts serves as a testament to the positive impact physical sports can have on mental health and well-being. Her story inspires others to explore similar avenues to enhance their mental health and build resilience.
