Generation Z, the newest entrants into the workforce, are bringing a heightened awareness of mental health issues. A recent report by Medibank and The Growth Distillery reveals that Gen Z in Australia is facing significant challenges with mental health but is less likely to seek professional help. Nearly 40% of Gen Z rate their mental well-being as below average, with financial stress, social media pressures, and workplace demands identified as contributing factors.
Despite being emotionally aware, many young people withdraw socially or seek distractions instead of professional help. They often turn to social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok for mental health information. Barriers to seeking help include fears of judgment, being dismissed, and high costs or long wait times for professional services.
This generational shift necessitates that employers adapt their mental health strategies to be more accessible and resonate with younger employees. Organizations are encouraged to integrate digital platforms and peer support systems to effectively engage Gen Z workers in mental health initiatives.
