The Australian Football League (AFL) community is grappling with a mental health crisis following the suicides of six former players, including Adam and Troy Selwood. Sydney Swans Hall of Famer Tadhg Kennelly and mental health experts have voiced concern about the inadequacy of current mental health support systems for players. Kennelly emphasized the transition out of professional sports as a particularly vulnerable period, highlighting the loss of identity and community.
Kennelly co-founded WNOW, a support initiative for men that fosters connection and open dialogue. Experts like Sarah Tillott and Vita Pilkington stress the need for evidence-based programs and accessible support mechanisms tailored to athletes’ unique environments. Although the AFL and its Players Association maintain they have robust support programs, the repeated tragedies indicate systemic shortcomings.
Initiatives like “Tackle Your Feelings” provide community-level education and support, yet disparities in mental health resources between clubs persist. Greater leadership and cultural change within the AFL are urgently called for to prevent further loss and better support players during and after their careers.
