From Mental Health Condition to Meme: The Phenomenon of Dissociation

02/28/2024
in News

Samantha Hudson’s declaration of “I’m not ignoring you, I’m dissociating” during an episode of Spain’s Operación Triunfo has transformed into a widely shared meme, illustrating the intersection of mental health and internet culture. The moment, intense and captivating, captured the attention of viewers, leading to a surge in online references to dissociation as a common experience.

Dissociation, defined as the separation of previously linked elements, clinically refers to being physically present but mentally detached, often arising as a defense mechanism or a response to traumatic events. However, psychologists caution against the potential trivialization of mental health issues through humor, emphasizing the need to approach such conditions with sensitivity.

Individuals like 26-year-old Elena González share personal experiences of dissociation, recounting instances where stimuli became overwhelming, causing a mental disconnection. Another woman, using the pseudonym Alicia, reveals how motherhood and associated stress have heightened her dissociative episodes, prompting her to seek treatment.

Tauana Matias, director of Madrid clinic Implica Psicología, explains that dissociation is a mental response to stressful situations, with the depersonalization-derealization type being prevalent. This involves perceiving one’s own actions from a distance, creating a sense of escape. Juan G. Castilla, a doctor of clinical psychology at the Autonomous University of Madrid, warns about the severity of dissociative disorders, listing potential consequences ranging from self-harm to social and physical symptoms.

While the increased visibility of the term has shed light on the mental health condition, there are concerns about its appropriation into internet culture. The boom in the use of the term has led to its adoption as a catchphrase, akin to the previous trend with anxiety, potentially trivializing and romanticizing the condition. The risk of self-diagnosis is also highlighted, with psychologists emphasizing the importance of professional evaluation and not relying solely on individual experiences, even those shared by well-known personalities destigmatizing mental health.

In navigating the intersection of mental health awareness and online trends, experts emphasize the significance of understanding the intensity and duration of symptoms, cautioning against overgeneralization based on individual accounts.
