24/7 Mental Health Support at City Mission’s New Whakamaru

in News

Wellington, New Zealand — On November 18, the Wellington City Mission will unveil Whakamaru, a new community hub designed to provide 24/7 support for residents in need. Among its key features is a 24-hour Crisis Recovery Café, which will serve as a vital resource for individuals experiencing mental distress.

The Crisis Recovery Café will operate in a non-clinical environment, focusing on mental health crisis prevention and response. It is intended for individuals and whānau (families) who are not at immediate risk of harming themselves or others but require immediate support.

Integrated with the broader services offered by the Wellington City Mission, including housing, community support, and food assistance, the café aims to address both the immediate and long-term needs of those in mental distress.

Trauma-Informed Care

Staffed by trained professionals, the café will provide trauma-informed care. This includes one-on-one peer support, safety planning, and access to digital mental health services. The on-site team will also be trained in de-escalation techniques to ensure a safe environment for all visitors.

The goal is to provide an alternative to traditional emergency services, such as hospital emergency departments, police, and specialist secondary mental health teams, thereby alleviating their demand and allowing them to focus on critical cases. The café will be accessible to anyone aged 18 and over, with particular attention to groups that historically demonstrate poorer mental health outcomes.

Comprehensive Support Services

In addition to the Crisis Recovery Café, Whakamaru will house a team of Community Practitioners from the Wellington City Mission, including social workers, counselors, addiction support workers, and financial mentors. These professionals will offer support across various domains, including health, housing, income, education, and family support.

Where applicable, the team can refer individuals or families to on-site primary care, provided by Ora Toa, ensuring a holistic approach to wellbeing and support.

Conclusion

Whakamaru represents a significant step forward in enhancing mental health services in Wellington. By providing accessible, community-based support around the clock, the Wellington City Mission aims to foster a safe and welcoming environment for those in crisis. This initiative underscores the commitment to improving mental health outcomes and supporting individuals and families in their times of need.
