Focus at Four: Tips for Maintaining Mental Health During Election Season from a Brazos Valley Expert

As Americans prepare for the upcoming elections, many are also bracing for the stress and anxiety that often accompany this period. A recent survey by the American Psychological Association reveals that 77% of adults express concerns about the nation’s future.

Sacha Bradley, a mental health expert with Brazos Valley Mental Health and Wellness, emphasizes the importance of staying informed while also recognizing the limits of what we can control. “We do what we can, but then we have to let go and practice our healthy coping skills. Taking a pause from social media and news outlets, ensuring you’re eating well, and going for walks are crucial during this time,” Bradley advises.

Bradley encourages individuals to adopt several techniques to manage stress as Election Day approaches. One key method is practicing deep breathing exercises. “Breathe in for five seconds, hold for four, and exhale for five. This can be done anywhere and at any time,” she explains. Additionally, she recommends grounding techniques, such as identifying five things you can hear and five things you can see, to help maintain mindfulness and stay present.

In light of potential disagreements that may arise during the heated election season, Bradley advocates for compassion and understanding. “People have the right to share their opinions, just as you do. If we can approach one another with kindness, we can navigate this period more effectively,” she states.

For those who find themselves overwhelmed or spiraling into anxiety, Bradley suggests taking a step back from political discourse. “It’s vital to acknowledge when you’re becoming too caught up in the moment. If you feel yourself sinking into a negative space, recognize that it’s okay to pause. Talking to a friend or utilizing your support system can be incredibly beneficial during this time,” she adds.

By incorporating these strategies, individuals can better manage their mental health and foster a sense of calm amid the political noise.
