Mind Cymru Offers Mental Health Support Tips for the Festive Season

12/22/2024
in News

As the festive season approaches, Mind Cymru has issued advice to help individuals manage their mental health during what can be a particularly challenging time of year. The charity highlighted that Christmas, while often seen as a time for celebration, can bring added stress due to financial pressures, difficult memories, and the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Managing Stress During the Holidays

Mind Cymru encourages people to prioritize self-care during the Christmas period, offering several practical tips for those who may be struggling with their mental health. The charity advises setting boundaries, taking breaks from holiday activities, and practicing patience with oneself.

Sue O’Leary, Director of Mind Cymru, explained: “Christmas is a time to celebrate, but for many, it can also amplify difficult emotions, often in negative ways. There are many reasons why someone might not feel like celebrating, and it’s important to remember that it’s okay to feel this way. Support is available for anyone who may be struggling during the holiday season.”

Planning Ahead for Mental Health Support

For those managing ongoing mental health challenges or dealing with disrupted routines over Christmas, Mind Cymru recommends preparing in advance. This includes ensuring access to essential services, checking the opening hours of mental health support services, having an adequate supply of any necessary medication, and planning a positive activity for after the holiday period.

Resources and Support

Mind Cymru also reminds individuals that there are several ways to seek support if they are struggling. The charity offers helplines, as well as access to its online community, Side by Side. Additional resources include the Samaritans (116 123) and the SHOUT text service (85258). The Mind website also provides valuable information on managing money worries and coping with mental health challenges during the holidays.

The charity’s helplines will remain open throughout the holiday period, with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

Coping with Mental Health Over Christmas

Mind Cymru’s advice serves as an important reminder that, while Christmas can be joyful for many, it can also be a difficult time for others. By taking proactive steps to care for their mental health, individuals can navigate the festive season with greater resilience and find support when needed.
