Northwood University Expands Student Access to Mental Health Support

02/01/2025
in News

Northwood University is enhancing its mental health services to better support students facing challenges related to well-being. The institution is addressing the growing need for accessible mental health care on college campuses, as student mental health issues have become increasingly prevalent across the nation.

Andy Sovis, the university’s Director of Counseling, acknowledged that while college is a time for personal growth, it also presents unique stressors that can affect students’ well-being. According to a 2024 survey by U.S. News & World Report, nearly 70% of students have experienced mental health struggles since starting college, and mental health remains the primary reason students drop out, as reported by the Gallup-Lumina Foundation’s State of Higher Education 2024 report.

To ensure that students have the resources they need, especially beyond regular business hours, Northwood has partnered with TimelyCare, a leading provider of virtual health and well-being services in higher education. This partnership will offer students 24/7 access to mental health support at no cost and without the barrier of traditional insurance.

TimelyCare provides a range of services, including the on-demand TalkNow feature, which connects students with a provider within five minutes. All sessions are held online, ensuring accessibility for all students. Sovis pointed out that half of the mental health visits through TimelyCare occur after regular business hours or on weekends, further emphasizing the need for continuous support.

A TimelyCare survey revealed that 64% of students are more likely to graduate if they have access to mental health resources, and the platform’s impact on student well-being is notable. TimelyCare reports that 75% of students who accessed their virtual mental health services reported improvements, including 100% of those at risk of suicide.

Dean of Student Affairs, Andy Cripe, highlighted the university’s commitment to prioritizing student health and safety. He emphasized that the partnership with TimelyCare will make it easier for students to get the help they need while also helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. By offering around-the-clock access to critical mental health services, Northwood University aims to provide peace of mind to both students and their families.

This expansion of mental health resources is part of Northwood’s broader commitment to student well-being, ensuring that support is always available when needed.
