Wysa Merges with April Health to Combine AI and In-Person Mental Healthcare

03/14/2025
in News

Wysa, a company that offers an AI-enabled mental health chatbot, has announced its merger with April Health, a provider of virtual behavioral health services integrated into primary care. This collaboration will combine Wysa’s AI-driven solutions with April Health’s personalized, in-person care to create a comprehensive model for addressing mental health concerns.

The Role of Wysa’s AI Chatbot in Mental Health Care

Wysa’s chatbot is designed to guide users through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for various mental health issues, such as low mood, stress, and anxiety. In addition to the chatbot, Wysa offers a self-care library with exercises to help improve self-esteem, sleep, and mindfulness. There’s also an option for human coaches for users who want more personalized support.

In 2022, Wysa’s chatbot earned FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for use with patients 18 and older who have chronic musculoskeletal pain, depression, or anxiety. This designation allows the tool to be used in a medical setting and further positions Wysa as a leading innovator in digital mental health solutions.

April Health’s Role in Integrated Behavioral Health

April Health, on the other hand, provides mental health support through a primary care provider (PCP), making behavioral health part of the primary care experience. April Health addresses concerns like stress, anxiety, and loneliness while supporting individuals through significant life changes, chronic illnesses, or loss. This approach allows patients to receive integrated care with a focus on whole-person health.

The merger will allow for the combination of behavioral health specialists, Wysa’s AI offerings, and psychiatrists to provide continuous care. This model will enable patients to receive mental health support between in-person visits, ensuring they have access to assistance whenever they need it.

Improving Access to Mental Health Care

Ramakant Vempati, cofounder and president of Wysa, emphasized the importance of immediate access to mental health care. He said, “No one should have to wait for behavioral health care, yet the reality is most patients face long delays, assuming they ever get the support they need.” By merging Wysa’s AI technology with April Health’s personalized care model, they are creating a seamless system where patients can receive immediate mental health support while still benefiting from expert-led, in-person care.

Expanding Reach and Adoption

The integrated model has already been successfully adopted by April Health’s current primary care partners, including LifePoint Healthcare and The Newton Clinic, an affiliate of MercyOne. This approach ensures that patients receive mental health care as part of their overall health management.

The Larger Trend in Mental Health Innovation

Wysa’s partnership with April Health is part of a broader trend toward integrating digital mental health tools with traditional healthcare. Last year, MassMutual, a financial services company, incorporated Wysa Assure, an AI-powered mental health app, into its health and wellness offerings. This app, developed in collaboration with Swiss Re, is specifically designed for life and health insurers to support their clients’ mental well-being.

Additionally, Wysa launched Wysa Copilot, a hybrid digital and human therapy platform, and introduced a multilingual AI safety initiative called Safety Assessment for LLMs in Mental Health (SAFE-LMH). This initiative evaluates the safety and efficacy of large language models (LLMs) in mental health conversations, ensuring that the AI used in this space is both safe and effective.

In 2022, Wysa secured $20 million in a Series B financing round, following a $5.5 million Series A fundraise the previous year. These investments underscore the growing demand for innovative digital mental health solutions and the company’s commitment to expanding its impact.

Conclusion

The merger between Wysa and April Health represents a significant step in the evolution of mental health care, combining cutting-edge AI technology with human expertise to offer a comprehensive and accessible solution. As the demand for mental health services grows, this partnership is poised to provide immediate, personalized support to patients, helping them navigate mental health challenges with greater ease and efficiency.
