Dr. Omotayo F. Ajirotutu, Head of Psychological Services at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, has called for better communication and interpersonal relationships in the workplace.
Dr. Ajirotutu made the statement on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, during a Public Lecture titled Effective Communication and Interpersonal Relationship: Key to a Healthy & Productive Workplace at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG). The lecture was part of the university’s 12th Annual Health Week, organized by the UNILAG Medical Centre.
The lecture aimed to educate the audience, including staff and students, on essential communication concepts, such as the difference between hearing and listening, effective listening techniques, the steps involved in communication, and common barriers. Dr. Ajirotutu also discussed the types and characteristics of good interpersonal relationships and highlighted the benefits of fostering a healthy, productive workplace.
He emphasized that a healthy workplace is one where employees feel valued, supported, and motivated to do their best. Such an environment promotes physical, emotional, and mental well-being, boosting job satisfaction and productivity. Dr. Ajirotutu stressed that effective communication and interpersonal relationships are crucial, especially in healthcare settings, where they impact patient safety, satisfaction, and teamwork.
The lecture concluded with insights into how poor interpersonal relationships can harm hospital professionals, along with tips for creating a more productive and healthy work environment.
Dr. O. O. Coker, Director of UNILAG Medical Services, and Prof. Folasade Akinsola, former Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, also spoke at the event. Prof. Akinsola represented the UNILAG Medical Centre Board Chairperson, Prof. A. O. Oduwole.
The 12th Annual Health Week began on Monday, December 2, 2024, with a sensitization walk around the campus to mark World AIDS Day. The week of events ended with a free medical screening for the university community on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall.
