Even those whose jobs aren’t immediately at risk report “AI anxiety”—a constant worry about keeping up with technological changes.
This anxiety manifests in several ways. Many workers feel pressured to upskill constantly, fearing they’ll become obsolete. The pressure to adapt to new tools—often with little training—leads to cognitive overload. A study in Nature Human Behaviour linked AI-related stress to a 34% increase in reported insomnia among tech workers. Others experience “robot guilt,” feeling inadequate when AI outperforms them in tasks they once took pride in.
Employers can mitigate these effects by providing transparent communication about AI’s role and offering reskilling programs. Mental health resources tailored to technological change are also crucial. Until workplaces address these fears, AI’s mental health toll will continue to rise.
