Over 20,000 SA Kids Join Mental Health Program

The Adelaide Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation have reached a major milestone in their efforts to improve child and youth mental health. Over 20,000 children across South Australia are now participating in the Open Parachute Mental Health Program, a partnership aimed at boosting resilience and wellbeing in young people.

Open Parachute is a school-based program that offers practical strategies to help students manage stress and emotional challenges. Led by clinical psychologist Dr. Hayley Watson, the program uses evidence-based video lessons to teach children skills they can use to overcome obstacles throughout their lives.

The program has grown rapidly in the past two years, with participation increasing by 340%. In 2023, the number of students involved jumped from 4,778 to more than 21,000, spanning 53 schools across the state.

This surge in participation is largely thanks to the collaboration between the Crows Foundation, The Sebastian Foundation, and Open Parachute. By subsidizing costs for schools and families, these organizations have made the program more accessible to those who need it most.

One of the program’s ambassadors, Adelaide Crows Vice Captain Reilly O’Brien, has played a key role in promoting the initiative. O’Brien has been actively involved in the Crows Resilience Talks, which were developed in partnership with AFL players and Dr. Watson. His commitment to mental health was nationally recognized when he won the AFL’s Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in 2024.

“It’s incredible to see the program reach 20,000 participants,” O’Brien said. “The Crows Foundation and The Sebastian Foundation are doing amazing work in South Australian schools. I wish I had access to something like this when I was in school, so it’s an honor to promote it and be part of it.”

O’Brien added, “Talking to kids about mental health and resilience is incredibly rewarding. Being able to give back through this role is a privilege.”

The success of the program is also supported by key partners, including Thomas Foods International and Variety SA, who have helped bring the program to life.
