A groundbreaking mental health initiative in Powys, Wales, is set to grow after its overwhelming success in improving the lives of participants. The Domino Group, launched by Powys County Council’s mental health social work teams in Brecon and Ystradgynlais in late 2023, has made a profound impact on local adults living with severe or long-term mental illness.
Originally designed to combat loneliness and help individuals gain confidence in navigating public spaces and transport, the group’s success has prompted plans for expansion across the county. This includes potential women-only groups and new mixed-gender groups in other regions of Powys.
Building Confidence Through Connection
Named by one of its members to represent a “domino effect” of positive change, the group brings participants together in a supportive environment where they can engage in social activities, develop life skills, and reduce isolation.
Participants have spoken candidly about the personal benefits:
Lee shared, “The regular meetups are good fun. The weekly schedule prevents me from drifting in life, and they improve my social skills as I get to know people I wouldn’t expect to meet. I feel more confident as a result of the Domino Group.”
Rich added, “The Domino Group provides a safe and supportive space for us to share our experiences… I’m so glad my care coordinator suggested I join the group.”
Mark highlighted the value of autonomy: “Being part of the Domino Group gives us the opportunity to visit and choose places of interest… Attending the group reduces my isolation.”
A Strengths-Based Approach to Recovery
The initiative was celebrated during Mental Health Awareness Week (May 12–18) by Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys, Cllr Sian Cox, who praised the group as a model of human connection and empowerment.
“The Domino Group is testament to the magic that can happen when we come together as human beings… The group’s achievements demonstrate that people with mental illness aren’t defined by their illness—they are rounded human beings… Our role is to facilitate that.” — Cllr Sian Cox
The Council’s social work team embraced a strengths-based approach, focusing not just on the challenges individuals face, but also on their resilience, talents, and capacity for growth. This model enables participants to lead their own recovery journeys with the council providing facilitation and encouragement.
Looking Ahead
Given the group’s success and glowing feedback, the Domino Group is poised to expand, bringing its inclusive and empowering approach to more communities in Powys. The council is exploring:
Women-only support groups to meet gender-specific needs.
New regional Domino Groups to reach residents in other towns and rural areas.
Continued support from trained facilitators like Paula and Mel, who have been instrumental in nurturing trust and dialogue within the group.
Immediate Support Still Available
Anyone in Powys struggling with mental health can receive immediate support by phoning 111 and selecting option 2 for mental health assistance.
The success of the Domino Group illustrates how grassroots mental health initiatives can foster real change when built on community, inclusion, and trust—and Powys is now set to become a beacon of that success.
