Bellaire High School Hosts “Stronger Together” Mental Health Week

Bellaire High School (BHS) is hosting a Mental Health Matters Spirit Week from May 12-16, aimed at promoting healthy habits and raising awareness about mental health. The event, led by the BHS Sources of Strength peer group, focuses on education and support for students struggling with mental health challenges.

The “Stronger Together” theme was chosen by the peer group to highlight the importance of personal support and connections in improving mental well-being. Teacher Rebecca DiFabrizio explained that these bonds are essential to fostering mental health.

“Our goal is to offer meaningful activities that help students and staff build connections and coping skills,” DiFabrizio said. The group has been planning the week’s events since January and is committed to offering programs that support mental wellness.

The week will kick off on May 12 with a talk by Jayla Robinson, host of the “Ask Yourself Why Not” podcast, focusing on positive mindsets and embracing healthy activities. This will be followed by a mini-resource fair where students can access helpful materials.

On May 13, the school will host a community cleanup, encouraging everyone to participate. Wellness Wednesday on May 14 will feature team-building activities for students. On May 15, activities like meditation, yoga, mandalas, and fortune cookie coping skills will be available. The week will conclude on May 16 with a mental health awareness walk in Union Square Park, with additional activities continuing throughout the day.

The BHS community is encouraged to wear green, the color of mental health awareness, and join the walk at 11:45 a.m. on May 16.

Local organizations are supporting the event, including the JB Green Team, which donated supplies for the May 13 cleanup, and South Street Apparel, which is providing T-shirts for group members. Other partners include Belmont Savings Bank, Bellaire Beautification Committee, and local churches.

DiFabrizio emphasized the importance of mental health initiatives, saying, “Prioritizing mental health is essential for academic success and overall well-being.” She added that the aim of this week is to reduce stigma around mental health and encourage students, staff, and the community to build supportive connections.

The Sources of Strength peer group has worked throughout the school year to promote hope, positivity, and mental wellness, and this week serves as a culmination of those efforts.
