A major new study has identified ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which make up approximately 57% of the average UK diet, as a significant contributor to increasing cases of autism, depression, and dementia.
The review, published in Brain Medicine, links the neurological impact of UPFs to microplastics, which are present in high levels due to food packaging, additives, and manufacturing equipment. These microplastics can cross the blood-brain barrier and may cause damage through inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
The researchers found overlapping harmful effects from both UPFs and microplastics on mental health.
